September Meet Up

Zone 9 Happenings

August is now behind us, and we are looking ahead to a fun filled September in the Zone. First, though, let’s take a look back at August before we look ahead. August in my home Rocky Mountain Region is usually fairly slow event wise. It is the one month of the HPDE Season that we don’t have an event at our local High Plains Raceway due to the heat. However, that did not stop the DE team from holding another successful Ladies Day HPDE and Track 101 HPDE at the Flatrock Regional Training Center in Commerce City, CO.

The Ladies Day HPDE originated over 20 years ago when a group of women DE drivers decided to put on an event just for themselves. They wanted a low-key track day where they could share what a DE event was with women who were a little hesitant to go the track with their husbands or go by themselves. The event has blossomed from its early days and is now used as a template for other regions wanting to hold similar events for their women drivers. On August 9 I along with 38 women drivers and nearly as many volunteers headed out in the early morning hours to Flatrock Regional Training Center for a day of learning, fun and friendship. Many of the women had never been on a racetrack before and were a little nervous at first. By the time the last checkered flag dropped the smiles were abundant. It is always gratifying to see drivers gain so much confidence in one day.

The following weekend was another RMR autocross weekend. The theme was Lei ‘n Laps and the organizers arranged for a Hawaiian Shave Ice truck to arrive at lunchtime so the participants could have a cool treat before heading out for the afternoon runs. The weather forecast was for afternoon storms, so the decision was made to squeeze in 5 morning runs in case we needed to shut down early. We were very fortunate, the rains held off and we were able to get in 9 total runs. Considering there were 68 drivers this was quite an accomplishment.

The same day as the autocross, RMR’s tour group offered the Quadruple Bypass Tour. I heard from several members that it was a great tour. The weather was fantastic and the route was wonderful. The tour ended with an optional lunch at Red Mountain Grill, which I know to be a great place to eat at the end of a fun morning of driving.

Rocky Mountain Region also did a multi-day tour to Mount Rushmore. I have seen pictures online and it looked like a great trip. RMR has been hosting these multi-day tours for several years, if you have never been on one you might want to try to catch the next one.

I know I’ve just been mentioning what has been going on in my home region. But, in September I will by attending the Carrera Region’s Multi-Region, multi-day Septemberfiesta, September 27-28 in Deming, NM. Also in September is the Rocky Mountain Thunder Club race and solo HPDE at High Plains Raceway. There are still openings for the solo DE, sign up on motorsportreg.

September 13 is a special day for  Porsche Club of America as it is the 70th Anniversary of the club. Most of the regions are celebrating the day with special activities. Alpine Mountain Region is holding a Anniversary HPDE at Pueblo, CO. Rocky Mountain Region is holding the 70th Anniversary Speedtember autocross at Colorado Air and Space Port, and for those not into the fun competition of an autocross there is the Picnic at Bear Creek Lake Park. Roadrunner Region is holding their 53rd annual Roadrunner Roundup in Rio Rancho, NM. Intermountain Region is holding an HPDE on September 12-13 at Burt Brothers Motorpark – this is an extremely fun track – register at motorsportreg.

There are a lot of fun things going on out there. So, get out there and enjoy! If you are doing something fun in your region let me know!
