Please join us on Saturday, July 13th for the “Fossil Beds” tour and explore the fossil history of a small part of Colorado. Beneath a grassy mountain valley in central Colorado lies one of the richest and most diverse fossil deposits in the world. Petrified redwood stumps up to 14 feet wide and thousands of detailed fossils of insects and plants reveal the story of a very different, prehistoric Colorado.
We will depart at 9:00 AM from Porsche of Colorado Springs at 917 Motor City Drive in Colorado Springs. Plan to arrive at the dealership by 8:15 AM for breakfast snacks, registration sign-in and a mandatory driver’s meeting.
Our route travels southwest from Colorado Springs along Hwy 115 and US 50 to Canon City. We will take a quick side trip on Skyline Drive to see some dinosaur footprints embedded in the sandstone rock before stopping for a restroom break. After the break we will head west on US 50 past Royal Gorge to CO-9 and head north toward South Park. Before we get into South Park, we divert into Guffey and north on County Road 102 toward the Gold Belt Byway on Teller County 11 and Teller County 1 to the Fossil Beds. After a stop to visit the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, we will head to lunch.
Lunch is still TDB with individual checks. There may be a maximum limit for lunch. If so, we will let everyone know. So, make sure you let us know during registration if you choose not to join us for lunch!
Registration fee for the tour is $10 per car.
Entrance to the National Monument is an additional $10 per person ages 16 and older and payable at the monument. You can use a National Parks Service Annual Pass or there are options for annual passes and free passes (see https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/passes.htm)
