AMR Florissant Fossil Beds Tour @ Porsche of Colorado Springs
Jun 26 @ 8:30 am – 3:00 pm

Join us on a picturesque drive to discover numerous fossils in the ridges and high mountain valleys of central Colorado. We will visit two such locations including Skyline Drive in Cañon City and the Florissant Fossil Beds National Park nestled in beautiful Teller County, Colorado.

First is a thrilling but slow ascent up Skyline Drive, a hogback ridge composed of upturned Dakota sandstone. Along the left side of Skyline Drive is a dinosaur trackway that showcases fossilized Ankylosaurs footprints. This breathtaking roadway, built by prison inmates in the early 1900s, boasts a single-lane, one-way road that rises about 800 feet above the surrounding terrain. Not for the faint of heart or those with fear of heights, there are no guardrails despite sharp drop-offs on either side of the road. Don’t worry, we will drive it nice and easy. A scenic overlook at its peak allows a photo opportunity for navigators before we descend into historic downtown Cañon City.

Next, we will visit Florissant Fossil Beds National Park containing some of the richest and diverse fossil deposits in the world, and where you can explore outdoor exhibits on multiple self-guided .5-mile and 1-mile hikes.

Other local sites and interests in the area include the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center in Woodland Park and Cripple Creek, a former gold mining camp that is home to numerous casinos and historic sites.

The tour will end with an authentic German lunch at The Swiss Chalet Restaurant in Woodland Park with individual checks. Lunch will be limited to 50 people so please register for the tour early and make sure to indicate if you choose to pass on the lunch.

We will depart at 9:00 AM from Porsche of Colorado Springs at 917 Motor City Drive in Colorado Springs. Plan to arrive at the dealership by 8:30 AM for breakfast snacks, registration and a mandatory driver’s meeting.

Registration fee is $10 per car. Registration closes at midnight on June 23, 2021. Please use the following link to register or get detailed information:

AMR PIKES PEAK HILL CLIMB TOUR @ Penrose Heritage Museum
Jul 10 @ 1:30 pm – 5:00 pm

Join us on Saturday, July 10, 2021 for a very different  AMR tour. We’ll ascend Pikes Peak from a different perspective – that of the drivers who race up America’s Mountain at breakneck speeds. Don’t worry – we will observe all posted speed limits!

The tour will start at the Penrose Heritage Museum’s Hill Climb Experience, near the Broadmoor. We’ll talk about the history of this great race, check out the exhibits, and then hit the road. We will drive up the mountain, with stops at key points along the way to get the racer’s perspective and hear some interesting stories. Devil’s Playground will be our last stop in our Porsches, at which point we will enjoy being driven in luxurious shuttles to the summit (due to ongoing construction). The tour will conclude on the summit, where we’ll explore the magnificent, just-opened Summit House, and (hopefully) sample their world-famous donuts. This tour will not include a formal lunch as we usually do but, of course, feel free to informally get together with your Porsche friends either at the Summit House, or after you make your way back down the mountain. Due to traffic on the mountain this tour will be limited to 25 cars.

Our host will be AMR’s own Chris Lennon, past Pikes Peak International Hill Climb winner and six-time podium finisher, who literally “wrote the book on Pikes Peak” with The Peak of Racing.

AMR Registration fee is $10 per car. Additionally, Pikes Peak Highway tickets will have to be purchased in advance at a discounted rate (a link to do so will be provided to purchase these special tickets).

Please arrive at the Penrose Heritage Museum, 11 Lake Circle, Colorado Springs, CO 80906, at 1:30pm. We’ll spend about an hour for a mandatory drivers’ safety meeting, registration and museum tour. Then, we’ll depart for Pikes Peak. We expect to conclude the tour on the summit of Pikes Peak around 4:30pm-5pm.
