AMR Farmer’s Market Tour
Jul 17 all-day

Pueblo Farmer market tour, Sunday, July 17th2022.

60+ miles from Colorado Springs to final lunch stop

Lunch prices are from $7.69 to $16.80

We’ll attend five farmer markets east of Pueblo. Di Santi Farms, DiTomaso farms, Mauro farms, Milberger farms and Musso farms, Each has their own unique taste & style. Well ensure enough time at each location to check over the produce, make your sections, purchase and move on to the next farm, all within a three mile radius of each other.

Who knew an ear of corn or fresh tomato could improve your health, your community and the environment, all at the same time? Buying local farm foods is a simple way to do all three. Local food doesn’t suffer the “jet lag” of produce trucked across the country. It puts more money back into the local economy and saves a whole lot of gas.

Lunch will be at Milberger farms, a country Restaurant Featuring delicious homemade recipes and foods made with love and harvested from their fields.

My personal favorite? The ITALIAN SLOPPER! Homemade Italian Sausage on a freshly baked and toasted hoagie smothered in homemade green chile topped with two kinds of cheese. YUMMY!

Bring Cash (to avoid the credit card markup (3%)) and your own bags to transport the TONs of yummy & fresh produce you’ll be bring home. Gudrun & Raimond have made this “run” about ten times a year, for the past six years.

We will depart at 8:30 am from Bear Creek Park Pavilions (west side of 21st Street) on Argus Blvd.

Plan to arrive at 8:00 am for event check-in and a mandatory driver’s meeting.

AMR Gold-Belt Byway off-road tour
Aug 27 all-day

Join us in your Porsche or other off-road vehicle on the Gold-Belt Byway Off Road Tour.

We will meet at Porsche Colorado Springs at 8 a.m.  Please park next door at Colorado Springs Powersports (945 Motor City Drive).

Please complete the PCA Off-Road Driving Tour Self-Inspection Safety Checklist.pdf before arriving and bring to check-in (required to participate in this off-road tour)

The tour will take you through Phantom Canyon, lunch in Victor and continue along Shelf Road, ending in Cañon City.

This could be considered a group training drive, for club members to go out on their own later in the year for leaf peeping season.

(Leaf peeping is an informal term in the United States and Canada for the activity in which people travel to view and photograph the fall foliage in areas where leaves change colors in autumn. An organized excursion for leaf peeping is known as a foliage tour or color tour.)

Phantom Canyon Road

This road is one of the most scenic and historic drives in Colorado. The route increases in elevation from 5,500 to 9,500 feet and offers the chance to see a wide range of plants and wildlife in their natural setting. The gravel road follows the route of the Florence & Cripple Creek Railroad built in 1894 as a connection from Florence to the goldfields of Cripple Creek and Victor.

The unique bridges and tunnels offer a visual link to the area’s historic past. The road condition and narrow bridges encourage people to slow down and view the scenery. Twelve stations were established along the F&CC Railroad grade to service the trains hauling coal and supplies upgrade and gold ore downgrade to Florence’s smelters. As you drive the route, interpretive displays and signs designate the historic sites along the Gold Belt Line.

EARLY LUNCH STOP Gold Camp Bakery

They offer a wide selection of German and American items. Their German menu selection is not as sweet as the typical American pastries. For lunch they offer sandwiches on their freshly baked breads, salads, soups, chicken pot pies, miner’s pasties. They have a wide selection of cakes, pies and cookies, etc. We can call ahead to order pies and desserts for take home (Address: 112 S 3rd St, Victor, CO 80860).

Shelf Road

Shelf Road transformed an untraveled wilderness into a major route for the stagecoaches and freight wagons traveling between the Arkansas Valley and the Cripple Creek Gold Mining District. The rugged route’s name is ‘THE SHELF’, a five-mile stretch of road that hugs the sheer rock walls of above Fourmile Creek.

Originally called the Cañon City and Cripple Creek Toll Road, Cañon City’s business leaders financed the road. The toll collectors lived in small cabins nestled at either end of the Shelf and collected tolls every time a horse, wagon or stagecoach passed.

The toll varied from 30 cents to $1.75 for single riders, wagons, and stagecoaches. Ranchers driving cattle along the road paid for each head. Eventually, competition from railroads put the toll road out of business. Fremont County purchased the road and opened it as a free road. This road has made for a memorable trip since its construction in 1892 so be prepared for a driving adventure.

The tour begins on WEDNESDAY morning, July 27th leaving Fort Collins, CO heading north to Laramie, WY.  The drive crosses the Snowy Range with a private lunch in the small town of Encampment, WY. Tour leaves the Divide Restaurant continuing west across Wyoming before turning south at Baggs, WY, and then back into Colorado. The route ends in Palisade, CO for two nights at our favorite Wine Country Inn. Here we will enjoy a wine and hors d’oeuvres reception on Wednesday evening.

THURSDAY we will enjoy a bus tour around Palisade to visit wineries, a distillery, and a fruit farm/stand.  We may possibly even go to an Alpaca farm!   Lunch will be included.  Since the tour begins at 10am and returns around 3pm, you would have time to visit another business close by or drive to Enstrom Candies in Grand Junction.

The day concludes with a wonderful buffet dinner at the Wine Country Inn.

On FRIDAY we regroup for a short drive to Gateway, CO, for admission to the Gateway Canyons Auto Museum. This grand location houses the privately-owned Hendricks Collection that displays 100 years of American automotive history.  Lunch at the Gateway Canyon Resort is included.  Driving resumes south through the fabulous Gateway Canyon on the way to the final destination, Durango, CO, for two nights.

SATURDAY in Durango gives participants 2 choices.  One choice is to be on your own to explore Durango and vicinity. Another choice is our optional ride on the Durango & Silverton narrow gauge railroad to Silverton.

This Optional Activity ($143 per person)includes a step back in time as we enjoy a leisurely trip to yesteryear riding 3 1/2 hours on the Durango & Silverton train. With 2 hours in the historic mining town of Silverton we are able to enjoy the sights, shopping, food, and libations. Return to Durango is via the deluxe motor coach bus.
