OktoberFAST HPDE 2021 wrap-up
The “Junction” of Safe & Fast
It was a dark and stormy night….no, wait, sorry wrong story. The final HPDE of the 2021 season at La Junta Raceway actually began on Friday night. Participants gathered at the hottest spot in La Junta – The Hampton Inn – for beer, pizza and early registration. After a slight SNAFU with the local Domino’s Pizza (who would have thought there were 2 very similar parties planned at the Hampton at the same time!) the pizza arrived and was devoured. With about 60% of those registered checking in early it made registration the next day a lot smoother.
Saturday dawned a bit overcast and cool with some rain that we’d gotten overnight, but the forecast predicted dry and warming temps and it did not disappoint. The drivers meeting got underway on time with Event Lead CDI (Chief Driving Instructor) Steve Carlson requesting the advanced group dry out the puddles on the track for everyone! Novice students paired up with their instructors, and the advanced drivers went out to dry the track. By noon, the temps were in the upper 70s, sunny Colorado-blue skies prevailed as a tarantula made its way safely across the paddock checking out the cars as he went under them! As the track heated up, so did the driving. A day of spirited fast and safe driving ensued for all. La Junta is the perfect track for all levels of driving. It looks very simple from the layout, but the more you drive La Junta the more you realize the level of finesse some of the corners require. It’s almost as if the more you challenge the course, the more it challenges you – the driver.
With the track cold for the day, Beer 30 commenced and with beverages in hand CDI Jeremy Vreeman led willing participants on a track walk. A track walk is exactly that – a walk around the track with various stops along to way to discuss or even look at things you can’t see while driving 100 mph. Given the historical nature of La Junta Raceway, the participants learned a bit more about LJR than they probably anticipated. Meanwhile back at the classroom trailer we all eagerly awaited the banquet from Mexico City. Once dinner arrived, drivers and guests gathered outside on picnic tables as well as inside and enjoyed a long-time AMR favorite restaurant. Dinner entertainment was provided by the one and only, Allan Lasater on his electric guitar. Allan’s not just a great driver, and the track manager in La Junta – he’s an amazing singer and guitar player! Taking requests, providing a “name that tune” segment, it was a hit with everyone present.
Sunday, while nice and cool in the morning, heated up and found all ditching sweatshirts for sunscreen. Another beautiful day of driving. With slightly fewer people driving on Sunday, the day ran a bit shorter. After the final run group and the track was once again cold, the coveted John Deere Award was given out by Steve Carlson to Gary Muller from Durango, CO for his amazing spin out 300’ from the track entrance. While there were fewer people hanging around on Sunday afternoon as many get on the road back home and back to reality, there was one thing that was certain: it was a great weekend and a good time was had by all!
Special thanks to sponsors that helped make this weekend so perfect: Big Mission Motorsports, Creative Consortium, State Farm Kelly Muse Agency, and 314 ½ LLC!
If this sounds like fun, you’re right it was! Never been to an HPDE? You should try it. Stay tuned for information about events during the “off season,” how to get involved if you DON’T want to drive (yes, we need volunteers), and HPDE-101 a non-driving event (Feb/March 2022) to kick off the track season.
For planning purpose only. Event subject to change or cancellation.
Please join the Alpine Mountain Region (AMR) Porsche Club as we host a free non-driving informational session, HPDE 101.
This informal get together, co-hosted by Porsche Colorado Springs will whet your appetite for the upcoming season if you’ve never taken your car on a track, been once, or are a seasoned driver. What We Will Cover:
- What is High Performance Driver’s Education (HPDE)
- What to expect from a HPDE from the driver’s perspective
- How to prepare your car and yourself for your time on and off track
After a short presentation, we will open Q&A with a panel of current drivers from Novice to Experienced and Instructor level to share their stories and answer any questions.
There is no cost to attend, but we do require that you register at https://msreg.com/2022hpde101. That way we know how many doughnuts and coffee to bring! Any first-time registration that also participates in their FIRST HPDE with AMR will receive $50 off that registration.
When: Saturday March 5th 9-11 am
Where: Porsche Colorado Springs 917 Motor City Drive Colorado Springs, CO
Registration Closes Friday March 4th

The RMR Grand Loop Tour is a unique opportunity to visit some of the Rocky Mountain West’s most scenic places. In an epic 4 day tour, drivers and their companions will travel with like-minded Porsche enthusiasts starting from Ft. Collins. This extensively planned, 700 mile driving tour bypasses dull interstate highways in favor of more exciting two-lane highways. These roads are often marked in blue on road maps. Travelers may encounter antelope, bison, elk, deer, and even a moose or a bear, so stay on the lookout for wildlife and bring your best camera! The tour officially ends in Durango, Colorado. Adventurers may consider taking the opportunity to use Durango as a pivot point for a Utah or Arizona Parks adventure before heading home.
The tour begins on WEDNESDAY morning, July 27th leaving Fort Collins, CO heading north to Laramie, WY. The drive crosses the Snowy Range with a private lunch in the small town of Encampment, WY. Tour leaves the Divide Restaurant continuing west across Wyoming before turning south at Baggs, WY, and then back into Colorado. The route ends in Palisade, CO for two nights at our favorite Wine Country Inn. Here we will enjoy a wine and hors d’oeuvres reception on Wednesday evening.
THURSDAY we will enjoy a bus tour around Palisade to visit wineries, a distillery, and a fruit farm/stand. We may possibly even go to an Alpaca farm! Lunch will be included. Since the tour begins at 10am and returns around 3pm, you would have time to visit another business close by or drive to Enstrom Candies in Grand Junction.
The day concludes with a wonderful buffet dinner at the Wine Country Inn.
On FRIDAY we regroup for a short drive to Gateway, CO, for admission to the Gateway Canyons Auto Museum. This grand location houses the privately-owned Hendricks Collection that displays 100 years of American automotive history. Lunch at the Gateway Canyon Resort is included. Driving resumes south through the fabulous Gateway Canyon on the way to the final destination, Durango, CO, for two nights.
SATURDAY in Durango gives participants 2 choices. One choice is to be on your own to explore Durango and vicinity. Another choice is our optional ride on the Durango & Silverton narrow gauge railroad to Silverton.
This Optional Activity ($143 per person)includes a step back in time as we enjoy a leisurely trip to yesteryear riding 3 1/2 hours on the Durango & Silverton train. With 2 hours in the historic mining town of Silverton we are able to enjoy the sights, shopping, food, and libations. Return to Durango is via the deluxe motor coach bus.

Treffen Georgia Mountains – Touring the Southern Blue Ridge
On behalf of the members of the Peachstate Region and the Treffen North America staff, we would like to invite you to attend Treffen Georgia Mountains – Touring the Southern Blue Ridge. Experience four days of driving, fine dining, and exploring as PCA heads to the historic high country of Northwest Georgia over April 19 – 23, 2023.
Our host for the week is the uniquely Southern-styled Barnsley Resort, located outside the small town of Adairsville. Situated on the grand, historic Barnsley Estate built by Godfrey Barnsley, the resort opened in 1999 with a pedestrian-friendly, English-inspired village setting with luxurious guest cottages. The 55-room Inn at Barnsley Resort and Georgian Hall opened in 2018. The Barnsley is a pet-friendly resort on 3,000 scenic acres in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It offers visitors the pleasures and pursuits of a fine Southern estate: exceptional culinary creations by Chef Javier Cuesta, a championship golf course, a sporting club, relaxing spa, excellent horseback riding and trails and wilderness for hiking, walking and biking. Ideal for leisure vacations, romantic getaways, business meetings and sparkling events, this celebrated retreat is just a short drive from both Atlanta and Chattanooga.
The Barnsley Resort is an ideal launching point for our planned driving tours and NDO activities. With mountain roads spanning all directions, destinations such as Booth Western Art Museum, the Wolf Mountain Winery, the Bavarian Village of Helen, the newly completed Savoy Automotive Museum, etc. are all within reach. We also have plans for bus tours to HQ PCNA/Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta. The Peachstate Region eagerly awaits to show you the beauty of the Northern Georgia.
